Location

The near river house is only an hour from Richmond, Williamsburg and Hampton Roads and two hours from the Washington metro area. From the Howard House, stroll or bike ride to the Town Park with pool and tennis courts, library, food market, churches and several shops. Several fine restaurants with entertainment are also within a few blocks from the house as are three marinas on Urbanna Creek.

Urbanna was founded in 1680 as a port town which all tobacco, goods, slaves or servants passed through by ship. Until 1930, Urbanna was a port of call for commercial vessels and steamboats from Baltimore to Norfolk. Just outside of town are two of America’s most influential plantations; Rosegill est. 1649 and Hewick c. 1648. Today, Urbanna is a haven for recreational boaters, and fisherman: a living museum of Chesapeake Bay region town life, history and architecture; and thriving specialty retail center.

Urbanna is the host to the annual Oyster Festival held the first weekend in November. This famous celebration has grown in variety and scope each year and includes musicians, vendors, artisans, parade and the famous oyster shucking contest. Other events such as Art on the Half Shell, 4th of July and Christmas Parade are all held within a short walk from the Howard House.

For water enthusiasts, Urbanna offers a spacious protected anchorage and several full service marinas. Fishing, kayaking and sailing trips on Urbanna Creek or the Rappahannock River can be enjoyed as well.
